PROfoam – XR tool organizer [2025]

This project was developed at the XRCC hackathon 2025 in Berlin for the Engelbert Strauss challenge.

Many professionals and hobbyists face a common issue: they have a custom set of tools or objects, that is specific to their profession, interests and workflow. To prevent damage and insure smooth and efficient operation, it is beneficial to keep these tools sorted. While regular toolboxes provide space for tools of different sizes and shapes, they fail to provide designated places for every single tool and can struggle with intricate or unordinary shapes.

For this reasons, professionals have used toolbox inserts, to give every tool a place in the toolbox.

However, if your toolkit extends beyond standardized tool sets, these inserts need to be custom-made. Each tool needs to be measured, recreated digitally and a layout needs to be designed, before the insert can be CNC-machined from a foam block. A painstaking, tedious and expensive process.

PROfoam aims to solve this issue using machine learning, XR technology and 3d printing.

The application generates metrically accurate 3d models of tools, using an Image-to-3d AI model.

The XR interface makes it easy to arrange the tools in a perfect layout.

Once finished, the application generates a 3d mesh of the insert, that can be 3d printed.
